In the tradition of Congregational Churches, First Congregational Church of Coventry is governed by the Members of the Congregation. The Church operates under By-Laws (the Member-ratified rules of governance) that empower The Church Council to make many decisions. Our Church Council is composed of elected Church Officers and Chair of each Board (or a representative appointed by the Chair).
Below are the Boards that help govern our church.
Deacons – The Deacons’ primary mission is service in Christ and assisting the Pastor in providing pastoral care to the membership. They provide spiritual leadership, assist in the planning and preparation of worship services including the administration of Sacraments. Deacons receive and act upon requests for membership.
Christian Education – All education, from cradle to grave, is managed under the direction of the Board of Christian Education.
Trustees are responsible for the care and custody of the property of the Church including maintenance and security. Trustees will assume leadership in planning of capital projects for the improvements and/or modifications to the Church’s property.
Music – The board includes the Choir Director and Organist. The Board shall promote the choir and provide for the care of all the Church’s musical instruments, purchase music and all other equipment necessary for its program(s),
Missions – This Board actively promotes an intelligent missionary spirit in the membership of the Church to bring the teachings of the Christian faith to bear on the economic, cultural, and political problems at home and abroad. They encourage and provide opportunities for active involvement in special projects for the greater community, including World missions, Homeland Missions and Local Missions.
Finance – in charge of the financial affairs of The Church, maintaining its compliance with all the regulations prescribed by the laws of the state
